Miranda Matthews Artist
Miranda MatthewsI have considered myth and magic, extending into the uncanny factors present in the built environment. I work in sculpture and drawing. I look for the essential differences within the familiar: the double-takes which disrupt the routine. In 2006 I engaged with natural forces, such as electric storms and stellar formations. I reflected upon humans' partial explanations of the actions of such phenomena. I also focused on microscopic struggles, portrayed as small fighters scuffling. The 2007 Urban Regeneration series is made from reclaimed polystyrene, plastics and enamel paint. The curved surfaces are a canvas in meta-dimensions. Included in this series are aerial sculptural forms made from joined ellipses, that traverse space and matter as I imagine the tiny electronic particles called neutrinos would. This year I have worked with the concept of the tumbleweed, making abstract wire sculptures that are tranported through dawn and twilight environments. The Tumbleweeds take on new meanings in different situations. I also continue to work on the Drawn To series. These pencil drawings portray iconic objects, which are more than the sum of their existence. I am currently exploring Memory Texts, statements which are stencilled then photographed through, to settings which recall momentary experiences.
